If you want to pig out, you can consider doing so at The Carvery, Park Hotel Alexandra. I like my yusheng to have bursts of citrusy sweetness – bonus if its healthy – instead of being blanketed in sugar. The Carvery Golden Eight Treasure Yusheng with Cured Trout and Abalone ($68+) suits my palate perfectly. The combination of shredded vegetables, candied walnuts, fruits and generous topping of cured trout and abalone, all brought together with a slightly tart white balsamic and peach dressing.

Following the tradition of abundant feasting, The Carvery has lined up auspicious marquee highlights of the signature roasts. From chicken, pork, lamb and beef – all these premium meat cuts are served at the carving station right smack in front of the entrance so you won’t missed it.
Using only top quality Australian prime rib further dry-aged with Himalayan salt to concentrate the flavour before slow roasting, the Angus Beef Prime Ribs (weekends only) is the piece de resistance at The Carvery. You just cannot go without trying it!

The signature ones for this CNY includes the Pork Porchetta with Mushroom and Chestnut Stuffing, which is the Chinese Roast Pork made from Prime Grade pork belly with satisfying crunchy crackling skin, and the Spit-Roasted Char Siew Chicken. The bird possesses that sweet, savoury richness which probably came from Chef Ian Hioe’s own seasoning mix of hoisin, superior cooking wine and other condiments.

parkhotel

Of course, you get to enjoy the all-time delectable like the salad and dessert spread, western and Chinese stations, with some given a festive twist. So if you came with a family everyone will surely will have their favourites!

Here’s a bonus for those who dined during the first 3 days of the lunar new year (24 to 27 Jan 2020), will receive a complimentary ‘Golden Prosperity’ Welcome cocktail, and a Lunar New Year Lucky Bag containing a pair of mandarin oranges and a pack of Park Hotel Group angpows. Also, they will be entered into the hotel’s Lunar New Year Grand Draw to win a 2D1N Weekend stay at Park Hotel Alexandra*.

New Year New Skin Clarity – Removing Acne Scars the Painless Way with Secret RF

Author: Alexius Chua

Pimples come and go, but acne scars are like permanent marks on the face. You don’t need a close inspection to notice the acne scars on my cheeks and forehead, the contours look just like the uneven sand playground my nephews love to play at. Blame it on my reckless teenage years when I didn’t follow through the proper skincare routine and squeeze the pimples incessantly without thinking of the consequence 🙁

This affects my confidence and made me quite a reserved person. Okai perhaps its because of personality but my skin condition plays a part of it too.

Aesthetics Central Clinic

1 month after treatment, the scars has pretty much lightens already

Thankfully, a friend recommended me to visit Aesthetics Central Clinic at Clarke Quay Central, and scheduled an appointment with Dr Ryan Tan, who has a decade of experience in the aesthetics treatments. Dr Ryan suggested Secret RF for my first acne scar treatment – a revolutionary non-surgical treatment that uses fractional radio frequency (RF) and micro-needles for the treatment of depressed acne scars like boxscars, ice-pick scars and rolling scars. It also has added benefit of skin tightening and lifting, and addressing signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles.

Aesthetics Central Clinic

The Treatment
Before commencing the treatment, my face is washed and subsequently numbing cream is applied by the assistant. Then I waited outside for around 30minutes for the numbness to take effect. Dr Ryan then proceeded to inject 2 shots of local anesthesia onto my cheek to reduce the pain.

Aesthetics Central Clinic

As I have a low pain threshold, the Secret RF treatment is surprisingly not as pain as I thought to be, almost pain-free. All I hear is the zapping from the Secret RF device and light flashing while the device work its magic around my face.

As you can see, while there is no bleeding or bruising, my face is red and abit swollen immediately after the treatment. To speed up the recovery process I will need to apply anti-biotic cream for 5 days, and remember to hydrate, moisturize and sunscreen!
Nevertheless, I went out after the session to meet friends as its weekends.

Aesthetics Central Clinic

A week after the treatment, the redness has subsided after 2 days and I am quite happy with the results as the acne scars have reduced, especially on my right side of the cheek. The skin is also much smoother and whiter too! I was told that I will require a combination of treatments such as Infini Acne Scar Treatment or CO2 laser to achieve better results.

Just see the above before treatment and after treatment comparison, the skin condition is so much better. Confidence restored! Nevertheless, as the scars has been haunting me for a decade plus already, more sessions are needed to completely zap away these acne scars.

If you suffer the same skin problem as me, I would highly recommend you to consult the friendly Dr. Ryan Tan on how to improve the face condition and restore your confidence back.

Prosperity Buffet to Wow at Swissotel Merchant Court

Author: Alexius Chua

To welcome the year of the rat – or metal rat to be more precise – Swissotel Merchant Court have prepared an array of festive dishes and takeaway treats to wow your family and loved ones.
Starting 10 January 2020, The Prosperity Buffet at Ellenborough Market Café will feature notable Chinese dishes such as Steamed Red Garoupa, Dried Oyster Fatt Choy, Fish Maw Soup and many more.
Known for its tantalising medley of Asian and International delights, with a view of the banks of Singapore delight and not forgetting durian pengat, I am piqued by how their CNY dishes would fare

swissotel

The first dish is the Fruity Lobster Yu Sheng, which possessed a delightful mixed texture of crunchiness from the veg and ‘bird nest’ made of fried yam ring, and slight chewiness from the lobster with every bite.
For the second dish, the Roasted Honey-Glazed Char Siew or Crispy Golden Pork Belly Platter, the char siew tastes divine with good fat/lean meat ratio and its roasted to perfection.

swissotel

Nobody would say no to the Braised Buddha’s Temptation Claypot. Brimming with exceptional sea treasure delicacies of abalone, sea cucumber, dried oyster and tiger prawns, every ingredient is artfully placed and tastes heavenly with that broth. The baby abalone is so tender and flavour, yum yum!

swissotel

The rice in this Waxed Duck and Sausage Rice has that nice wok-hei flavour, and the smell floats down heavenly when the lid is lifted. I would definitely finish three bowls of this if not for the fact that my stomach space is almost to the brim at this stage already.

swissotel

The flavours of this Steamed Red Garoupa is textbook good. Traditional, expected and the fish tender to the bones. Coupled with the waxed duck and sausage rice above, it makes a powerful combo of clearing bowls.

swissotel

As mums usually say, you cannot be prosperous without eating Fatt Choy during Chinese New Year, and this Braised Dried Oyster Fatt Choy and Black Moss is so visually appetizing and easy to down there’s no need for mum’s nagging. I really appreciate the flavourful sauce which holds the individual elements really well.

Feed Clean Feed Nutro – Roro’s Transformation Journey

My little baby seal doggo is not a fussy eater and I really appreciate this part of him. He finishes whatever we give him even if he does not like the food. You can tell how much he loves the food from the speed he eats.

singapore dogs

I’ll be honest. I do not feed him every Tom, Dick & Harry brand I come across. I am a fussy fur-mom and I try to give him the best I can. Sometimes, my friends around me commented that I am overly protective.

My little boy was born with skin problems so I tend to opt for kibbles that will give him a soft, shiny coat and one with plenty of nutrients for him so that he can remain extremely cheeky and playful. He is also rarely fed chicken kibbles.

I have recently switched his kibbles to NUTRO as it is made from a clean simple recipe that contains natural ingredients and high-quality protein from real meat. I did a lot of research before deciding to change his diet to NUTRO.

If humans should eat clean and healthy food with quality nutrients that are beneficial to our bodies, our furkid should eat the same too.

nutro dog food

NUTRO is a brand that helps keep his skin healthy, improve his digestion, boost his immune system and gives him stronger teeth and bones.

What I love about the brand is its simple recipe that does not contain wheat, soil protein, artificial preservatives, flavours, or colours. I don’t want to feed Roro with kibbles that contain chemicals or are highly processed. In other words, I was pretty confident with the quality of the kibbles.

nutro dog food

The recipe provides Roro with the energy he needs to remain active and playful. Natural fibres can be found in the kibbles to keep his digestive system healthy. From what I have observed, he has no soft or loose stools recently.

The good thing about NUTRO is that all the essential antioxidants, Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids are also found in the feed. These nutrients keep his immune system healthy, promote healthy skin, and encourage a soft and shiny coat.

nutro dog food

After eating NUTRO for a few months now, I noticed that Roro is even more active than before. He was already a very active dog but it seems like he is running around more. His tail never stops wagging every time we prepare his NUTRO feed too.

We shave him once every few months and noticed that the new fur is a little softer than before. I believe that if we continue to feed him NUTRO longer, we may see even more results.

When Roro is healthy and happy, I am equally happy too!

If you love your furkid, try feeding it clean with NUTRO and I hope your furkid loves the kibbles as much as Roro does 🙂

NUTRO is available online in 3 different flavours – Chicken, Lamb and Fish.

Festive Feast @ The Square Restaurant, Novotel Clarke Quay

Author: Alexius Chua

The sumptuous spread artfully presented at The Square Restaurant @ Novotel Singapore Clarke Quay would have made even King Henry VII envious. Packed in 1 room are 2 buffet spreads – Christmas and Chinese New Year themes – all equally enticing and with sinful desserts to boot.

Novotel Clarke Quay

It’s a merry little Christmas feast at The Square Restaurant from 1st to 31st December 2019. Starting the traditional xmas festive favourites with the proteins – 24-hour roasted brine turkey, roasted beef striploin and roasted lamb leg. There’s also A-la minute pasta with homemade salted egg sauce or Chef Kishen’s new creation – Mala sauce, which is not too spicy for me. Adding on the spread will be Seafood on Ice, Sushi and The Square Signature Laksa.

Novotel Clarke Quay

Here’s something to loosen up your belt for – the desserts. Their homemade Christmas Log Cake, Fruit Cake, The Square Signature Durian Pengat, Chocolate Fondue and Tiramisu are some that’s worth the extra calories for.

Novotel Clarke Quay

Coming in to the second festival which is just 2 months away, the Chinese New Year buffet would kickstarts from 8 January to 8 February 2020. Following the traditions, we have a toss of Yu Sheng to usher the new year with prosperity and start the year on the right foot. The Yu Sheng we had, of course is Novotel-style MEGA.

Novotel Clarke Quay

The spread features assorted Chinese BBQ platter, Roasted Chicken & Duck, Poached Broccoli with Dried Oysters & Black Moss and Dim Sum. The roast is always my favourite, and its perfectly moist and juicy meats perfectly cut by a master carver are worth more than gold.

Novotel Clarke Quay

For Lunar New Year’s eve, there’s the DIY Kong Bak Pau Station, Wok Fried Salted Egg Prawn, Wok Fried Sliced Beef with Fungus and Black pepper Sauce, and the not-to-be-missed traditional Hong Kong Style Steamed Pomfret. It’s freshest of the fish its not overpowered by the sauce, brilliantly executed.
Not to mention local infused pastries like Pandan Egg Tart, Taro Butter Cake, Bak Kwa Chicken Floss Swiss Roll and many other sensational desserts, to make your tummy and the year round and sweet, figuratively speaking.

Review: Linksys Velop Wifi Router Extends Wifi All the Way to My Bedroom

James and I signed up for a WiFi Broadband four months back when we got our keys
and we were given a free router for the plan we signed up for. We did
not think too much of it and installed the free router at home. Everything was good
until…….

UNTIL I COULD NOT GET ANY WIFI CONNECTION IN THE BEDROOM!

I love browsing YouTube and Instagram before I sleep but it is impossible to do so
when I started having issues with the connectivity. Sometimes there is some weak
connection in the room, but on most days, the connection can’t seem to reach my
bedroom at all..

Long story short, we live in a 3 bedroom apartment and the size is exactly the same as a 4 room HDB flat. As you know, new flats are way smaller so I thought it is impossible to not have any WiFi connection in the room.

I have to scroll through Instagram, YouTube and read emails before I turn in every night and it has become a habit. Not having WiFi connection is a huge issue to me and it doesn’t help when I don’t have unlimited data on my mobile plan.

I started searching for a reliable WiFi router and I was quite concerned about the appearance of techy stuff as I do not want it to ruin my home theme. A few brands came to my mind but Linksys Velop was highly recommended to me by my friends as they know the look and feel of my home. I was still contemplating if I should spend the additional money on a new router but when I saw how Linksys Velop Tri-Band looks, I went for it right away. They are so sleek looking that they do not look like routers at all! I would think that they look like some minimalist looking speakers. Haha.

I absolutely do not mind the minimalist design of Linksys Velop Tri-Band since they come in white and the theme of my place is purely black, cream/white and grey with some elements of gold decorations. I mean, how wrong can you go with white when it is quite a neutral color!

As compared to my previous free router with ugly antennas sticking out, I have no complains for the design of Linksys Velop. Love how simple it looks!

Even the setting up was pretty fuss-free. If a tech-idiot like me can fix it up, so can you.

It is easy to tell if you are having WiFi connection or not. If the light on the node shows blue, everything is working well. However if it shows red, it means that there may be something wrong with your internet connection.

What I love about Linksys Velop is that at any point in time when you feel that you need a stronger signal in another room, you can simply add on another node (the white linksys thing you see in the pictures).

I have 2 nodes at home right now. One sits in the living room, connected to the main cable, while the other one sits in my make up room (next to my bedroom). The connection is way stronger and faster than before too. I can watch movies smoothly on the tv without the sites pausing to load every 20-30 minutes and I can even use my laptop in my bedroom now! (Yay to settling blogposts in the comfort of my own bed hehe).

What’s beautiful about the Linksys Velop is that it is a one-time investment, if you are shifting to a bigger place, you can still bring them along and add on another node to the set. You do not have to chuck them aside and get another brand new set of  WiFi router.

You can also control your Linksys Velop Tri-Band through Linksys mobile app when your device is on.

Some function includes controlling your WiFi from anywhere and parental controls where the parents can manage their kids’ access and usage. Guest Access works the best for me. I can turn on the Guest Access via the mobile whenever I have friends in my house – I don’t have to share my password with them 😛

linksys

Internet security is ensured when you use Linksys as they have automatic firmware updates. You do not have to do anything, the node will update on its own!

I have been using Linksys Velop Tri-Band for a few weeks now and I have no complaints! What can I complain about when everything is so user-friendly, all the way from the set up to controlling the account via a mobile app.

After all, my request is simple, just give me a beautiful set of WiFi Router that grants
me stronger and faster WiFi connection at the comfort of my own home and on my
bed too! 🙂

YUN NANS (云海肴) opens its second outlet @ Westgate in style

Author: Alexius Chua

The largest Yunan F&B chain in the world just opened its 2nd outlet at Westgate, months after its flagship store at Jewel Changi Airport. Serving the local gourmands with its repertoire of highland cuisine (gao yuan liao li), the offering is a mixed bag of deliciousness with subdued stylishness, which I fancy very much.

Yun Nan

What’s different from its flagship store is this exclusive dish – Crispy Hor Fun with Truffle Prawn Broth ($15.90++). Only available at Westgate, the hor fun boasts a delightful interplay of texture of crunchiness and springiness with every bite. Topped with Yunan truffle shavings, when poured with the prawn broth is enough to perfume the whole table. The frying is done well too. The plump prawn is moist with a bite. A simple but satisfying dish.

YunNan

Another dish that is new to the menu is the New Mystery Steam Pot ($33.90++). A fresh take on the classic YUN NAN’s top-selling dish Steam Pot Chicken with a secret ingredient added in to give it a personality. The soup is brewed using a unique technique that does not require a single drop of water. Instead the chicken is pressure-steamed for three hours. The soup is clear, delicate yet nourishing and robust in taste, which distinguishes it from the other versions I find in Singapore. Its an order that won’t disappoint your guests or family members.

YunNan

While I am spoilt with many choices at its flagship store @ Jewel, and tried to gulp down as much and fast as my chopstick’s skill can, this Steamed Red Grouper with Green Peppercorns ($48.80++) is new to me. Unforgettable, in a good way. The tantalising meat is so tender and moist, steamed alongside fresh green peppercorns for that fragrant and subdued numbing effect. Available only in limited quantities per day so do order beforehand.

YunNan

I know I am jumping around here, but the appetizer is good too. One star of the dish is the Shredded Chicken in Chili Lime Dressing ($9.90++). Nutritious black chicken is blanched and shredded by hand, mixed with their own in-house sour and spicy chili lime dressing. Very refreshing and wallet-friendly.

Plus, to celebrate its grand opening, Monga will be giving away free limited-edition Monga merchandise to the first 40 customers daily, only from 28 September to 4 October.

Stay Secured With A Pet Insurance in Singapore

Do you know how important Roro is to me?

What if I told you that I only wanted a hotel that allows me to bring Roro in, otherwise, I am going with other hotels?

What if I told you that I only feed Roro nothing but the best of the best from his birth till he reached adulthood even though I was only a student at that point in time?

prestige pets insurance

To even say that he is very important is an understatement. Roro is EXTREMELY important to me. He is family.

When I was in the UK for 5 weeks many years ago, I love how they can bring their furkid into the stores and even into the sub. Flyers about pet insurance were everywhere. Singapore had none of these then.

However, I was recently told that Singapore has Pet Insurance too! My reaction was “What? We can buy Pet Insurance in Singapore?!”

Did someone hear my calling? I did not know such insurances exist here.

Prestige Pets Insurance has insurance for your lovely furkids! Not only do they provide the best recommendation from a wide range of reputable insurers, they also have a personalised end-to-end claim assistance for you. They are
recommending Liberty Pets insurance – currently the only insurer that covers Non- Surgical Vet Treatments, which offer a great overall coverage for your Furkid. From what I have googled, not all pets insurance company covers this aspect.

My previous furbaby died of kidney failure. We spent close to 5 digits on his illness and hospitalization and we had to say goodbye to him still. It was heart-wrenching and mentally draining. If only he was covered under Prestige Pets Insurance….

There are three different insurance plans – Standard, Enhanced and Superior.

Pet Insurance in Singapore

The plans are pretty affordable.

pets insurance in singapore

Touch wood but let’s say if your furkid is down with an illness. Even without undergoing surgery, you could be spending up to $1,000 and above for his treatment already.

When Roro had some issues with his eyes, I spent a few hundred bucks on his consultation, another few hundred bucks on his injections and medications. Each follow up treatment cost me three digits too.

Even if I had the most basic plan, at only $350 a year, I could save HALF the vet fee. Far more than what I could have spent so that I can continue to pamper Roro with more loves.

If your budget permits, I’ll definitely recommend the Enhanced Package. At only $1.25 daily, it offers a higher claim value which will easily cover most accidental injury or Vet treatment when your little ones gotten ear infections, food poisoning, and others Non-Surgical and Surgical treatment.

prestige pets insurance singapore

To make things easier for you, I’ve taken a screenshot and attached above. If there’s anything youd like to know, do contact them on facebook or instagram. They’re really friendly and professional in answering your questions, which is one of the reasons why people buy from them instead of directly from Liberty Pets Insurance!

Roro is turning 8 next year and thank god he is as fit as me. Unlike humans, the older you are, the more expensive your insurance plans get. This does not apply to your pets.

If you are interested to know more about the insurance plans, you can visit them at https://www.prestigepetsinsurance.com.

Nono’s First Fried Chicken Outlet @ JEM

Author: Alexius Chua

Hailing from the land of vibrant street food culture, Taiwan’s famous fried chicken brand Monga is opening its first-ever outlet at Jurong East Mall in Singapore on 28th September. The brand has generated long snaking queues in the U.K, Canada and its home country, and attributes its popularity to its fresh, tender and juicy thick-cut chicken fillets unlike any other fried chicken brands out there. And funny Taiwanese celebrity Nono is here to blessed the opening. Together with Mingdao Liu, king of Taiwanese Fried Chicken, Monga is born.

Monga

#DidYouKnow that this Taiwanese fried chicken chain got its name from the Wanhua district of Taiwan, which is traditionally known as ‘Monga’. Its Taipei’s oldest district home to the bustling Snake Alley night market which the fried chicken fillet is famous for. So it’s a timely homage to the recent past and share the delicacy across beyond its home country.

Monga

I particularly love sinful oily fried food for its savoury bite. So its natural for me to gravitate towards Monga’s Nuggets (6pcs for $5.90, 9pcs for $7.90) and Fried Chicken Skin ($3.90). So easy to pop these into the mouth which makes them dangerously addictive.

Monga

Of course, who can miss Monga’s main offering – the big slab of fried chicken, every piece is made fresh and served piping hot. 3 flavours – The King ($6.90), which is dusted with original salt and pepper seasoning; Hot Chick ($6.90), dusted with chili paprika powder hand-made from Anaheim peppers; and The Taiker ($6.90), dusted with Japanese sauce and seaweed powder imported from Okinawa.
Among the 3 thick juicys I still adore the original one. The salt and pepper further enhanced the lovely fried taste of the chicken, and it’s just so satisfying mouthfeel to chomp into. Just to think about what I had munch makes me wanting for another bite again, just like a carnivorous caveman.

Monga

There’s also other yummies such as the Signature Fries ($2.90), Seaweed Fries $3.50, and the crowd favourite Sweet Potato Fries with Plum Powder ($3.50). While my hands dived into these finger foods I was humorously distracted by the whimsical fan and the comedic prowess of Nono during the event. For me who lived in Hougang, I must say its worth the trip to visit at least once!

Plus, to celebrate its grand opening, Monga will be giving away free limited-edition Monga merchandise to the first 40 customers daily, only from 28 September to 4 October.

SG’s Best Fried Rice @ Din Tai Fung

Author: Alexius Chua

To celebrate for winning the coveted title of Singapore’s Best Fried Rice (Restaurant Category) – organised in conjunction with the debut of Channel 5’s Fried Rice Paradise – The Drama Series – the famed Taiwanese restaurant Din Tai Fung launches a limited-edition XO Fried Rice with Shrimps & Eggs ($15.80). I must say, this fried rice has indeed ‘rice’ to the occasion. Bursting with wok hei, the succulent prawns are served atop aromatic, moist pearl rice mixed with fried flat fish. A special blend of XO sauce and dried scallops gives it a XOXO umami-ness.

Available from 1 – 31 October 2019 or while servings last, this dish is exclusively available at Paragon, BreadTalk IHQ, JEM, Jewel Changi Airport, Junction 8, Marina Bay Link Mall, Marina Bay Sands, Nex, Parkway Parade, Raffles City Shopping Centre, Republic Plaza, Resorts World Sentosa, Suntec City, Tampines Mall, Waterway Point and Wisma Atria only.

Din Tai Fung

Speaking of fried rice, I cannot miss this Fried Rice with Pork Chop. Instead of medley of prawns, it’s a big slice of pork chop cut into chewable pieces. The fried rice looks inviting from below and can hold its place without being overpowered by the pork chop in the flavour zone. An iconic dish that’s unmistakeably everyone’s favourite for its heartiness.

Din Tai Fung

Deviating from the fried rice category, there’s the Chicken Wings in Shrimp Paste (Har Cheong Gai). Texturally, the wings are delightful to munch. The umami of the shrimp paste works perfectly with the chicken, as expected of the standard of Din Tai Fung.

Din Tai Fung

The Deep-fried Handmade Tofu, though doesn’t really appeals much to the eye visually, is actually very appealing to the mouth. It distinguishes itself from other countless versions in Singapore with its inner tender silkiness and non-oily yet crunchy skin. You can order this and will not be disappointed.

Din Tai Fung

Lastly, who can mention Din Tai Fung without mentioning its signature classic Xiao Long Bao? Pretty to look at and really impressive in its soupiness with smooth thin skin layer, this XLB is just cloying for a second helping.
