My movie experience with Dolby Atmos

If you watch movies as often as me, I believed that you would have already realize what Dolby Atmos is and I am pretty sure that you will be able to feel the difference.

Dolby Atmos is a surround sound technology that is seen is some of our cinemas nowadays. Some cinema are still using 5.1 or 7.1 surround-sound set-ups.

Look at 5.1 and 7.1. Speakers are placed at points around the wall to make sure that the sounds get pushed towards the audience.

What about for Dolby Atmos? Yes, you can have as much speakers as the previous set up, but when Dolby Atmos is installed, the room receives a complete calibration where sound mixers can input sounds and voices at exact points in the room.

For example, when a plane flies past from the left to right, you can hear the sound traveling from the left to right instead of a flat sound all over the room. You could also literally feel the raindrops all above you as it they are real. It’s like 3D and multi-sensory.

Each speak in the system has its own feed, enabling new front, surround and ceiling-mounted height channels.

Just last week, I went to watch Hunger Games in a Dolby Atmos-installed cinema. As if the story wasn’t exciting enough, the 3D sound effect made it even real, leaving us with anticipation with what is going to happen next.

The planes were flying on top of us and even by closing the eyes, you could feel them on the right side (for example) because of the sound effect. It was like “seeing” sound.

I think the best part was at the war scene in the District where President Snow sent troops to bomb the hospital in another district (opps, spoiler!). You could see the humans on the left and feel the sound traveling from the left to the right and BOOOOMMMM, goes the hospital on the right.

It was that immersive to keep my attention glued to the show entirely for the 2 hours!! There wasn’t any part that could trigger my tears YET. But I would love to watch a sad movie in Dolby Atmos to see if I could tear even harder than other sound systems. Haha. I believe it would make a sad movie even more touching than it already is as there was another scene in the movie where a boy went up to Kitniss to ask if she would fight with them and she replied she would… That voice… That sound… It got me so touched because everyone stood up with the mockingjay sign. Dolby Atmos make movies more phenomenal.

Other than Hunger Games Part 1, a lot of other more popular movies were also played with Dolby Atmos in the past. As for the upcoming (or ongoing) movies like Big Hero 6, Penguins of Madagascar, The Avengers: Age of Ultron will also be available in Dolby Atmos!!

After watching movies in Dolby Atmos, I can’t really decide if I really want to watch a movie in a non Dolby Atmos cinema :/

It’s for sure. Once you tried the best, you don’t want anything lesser than that 🙂
