National Spelling Championship 2013
Launch of the 2nd year of RHB-The Straits Times National Spelling Championship 2013 was held on 25th Jan 2013 at Shaw Lido.
It is also known as the Big Spell, and pupils from all over Singapore will battle it out from March to April and compete for the title of the nation’s Top Speller!
This year’s preliminary round will kick off on March 9 this year, with more than 1,000 students from about 180 primary schools taking a paper test as a first step to qualify for the zonal rounds and the grand finals of the RHB-The Straits Times National Spelling Championship 2013.
Rich rewards are in store for those who make it to the top. The champion speller will take home $5,000 cash and win for his or her school the Challenge Trophy. The first and second runners-up will win $3,000 and $1,000 in cash respectively.
This event is organised by the RHB Banking Group and The Straits Times, in partnership with the Ministry of Education. It is also powered by technology partner iQ-Hub and supported by the National Library Board.

And yes, yours truly attended the event with a whole lot of cute primary school kids!
So happy I met Grace there! Lucky I wasn’t alone all the way 😀 (Picture credit: Grace)
All the 3 mascots.
1st in line, Little Red Dot, 2nd, A+ student and lastly, the RHB bank mascot. I like the middle one most!
I can totally blend in with them~ *act young*
When we entered the theatre, all the primary school kids were already seated inside cheering.
SO CUTEEEE! I love fat children most. *pinch pinch*
The contest aims to develop a greater appreciation of the importance of spelling in literacy development among primary school pupils and is organised in partnership with the Ministry of Education (MOE).
It’s good to have fun and educate the kids the importance of spelling at the same time.
Look at how excited they were. I wish I can turn back in time and go back to the phrase where joy and life were so much easier back then.
Grace and me again while waiting for the whole programme to start.
After the speeches from both RHB and Straits Times, there was a spelling competition going around the primary school kids and everyone was so excited to answer.
After all, who wouldn’t?! And at that moment, I saw a fat kid with a cookie lollipop in his hand swinging and dancing for his school LOL UBER CUTE.
Lastly was a spelling challenge between 2 schools via a game which is downloadable via tablet.
3 in each time and the winner team will get a hamper.
MY GOD. When I saw the hamper I was so jealous. Other than the misc items like bags, water bottles and school related stuffs, there was a digital camera for EACH of the kid. I want!!!
All in all, this is a good way to introduce more new words to the kids because they get to play and learn at the same time. The more they play it, the more words they learn. Wish learning was this fun during my days.
All moms should totally go and download it :O
