Singapore Internet Scam
If you haven’t already known, I spent more than 1 hour at the Neighborhood Police Post on Wednesday night.
I think quite a few of you had the misconception that I was “brought” to the station for some questioning but no-no. I walked in myself.
This was how it started; I was working when I received an email from a reporter on Tuesday afternoon. I thought it was a spam mail at first until I went to verify the email and the name of the sender. True enough, she is a reported from SPH.
The title of the email was – Inappropriate use of your blog pictures.
I thought nothing of it because it is common for people to save the photos from our blog until I saw this – the WhatsApp profile picture of the scammer is a picture of you.
WAHHHHH… I replied her email with my contact number as requested and asked her for the number and photo.
I saved the number and saw myself in his/her profile photo. I don’t know what crime did the person commit or how big the issue was. All I know was, the number was still active last night. The user was online most of the time.
She told me the police are already looking into the case and investigations are on-going. She was also kind enough to advise me to make a report as soon as possible to keep myself safe. I did not want to at first because I thought, since I am innocent, I should be safe but James thought the otherwise, better to be safe than sorry.
Like many of you, I only knew about this when I read the article in The New Paper today.
What on earth is wrong with that scammer? After reading the whole article, I hope that he/she has a heart. I felt so sorry for the victim’s family because they are already in financial difficulty. All the girl wanted was to earn $20 from a survey. It may be a small sum of money but it is enough to buy the family two meals.
After the article was published, I went to check on the number again. My picture was removed and the last seen was hidden. He/She must have found out about it. Please have a heart, if Cindy’s family has to work hard for the $1300 scammed, please work hard for your $1300 too.
