Taking A Trip back to the 1930’s @ 1933 (Capitol Piazza)

I wish to take a different perspective to start off this post. Not as a foodie, but interestingly as an Investor this time around!
I have always place a hugh stake in one of the stocks in my portfolio and that is BreadTalk Group. With this media food tasting, I knew once again my decision to place my faith in this International, home-grown F&B Brand wasn’t wrong afterall!
To add on to its already strong line of food chains such as Ding Tai Fung, Toastbox etc, BreadTalk has launched its latest F&B concept: 1933. A full-service, double-storey cafe nestled within the newly opened Capitol Piazza (Opposite the CIty Hall Mrt Exit).
Despite being an eventful day with the afternoon packed with 2-3 events that day, we still ensure that we rushed down to support our friends from TIN for this food tasting event @ 1933.
A couple selfie of us well-sync with the Black & Gold theme of its menu.
1933 seeks to take you through the time portal and travel back in time to the 1930’s where food cultures converges! Here, you get to enjoy the finest rendition of 1930’s cuisines.
Doesn’t this cuppacinno with the “1933” resting atop summarize the whole vintage feel with it brownish white colour? Sipping this nicely-flavoured 1933 Coffee with a thick aroma slips you back into the 1930’s while you get to also enjoy the beautiful interior of the newly-revamped Capitol Theatre. To share a slice of history here, the theatre was a former cinema and is now part of a major heritage redevelopment project, Capitol Singapore.
While i get busy with the 1933 Coffee which was made with Nanyang based coffee beans, M got busy with her 1933 Signature Milkshake. A must order for couples hanging out in ‘1933’ after their movie. I stole a sip while she wasn’t looking & I immediately fell in love with this thick, robust Milkshake that was generously served with a scoop of expensive Ben & Jerry’s Ice cream!
It wasn’t before long our dinner was served!
Scumptious-looking, isn’t it? Goes without saying when there were 5 hugh plates of their signature food items being served which seeks to satisfy our every palettes!
We kickstarted the food tasting session with the Thai-Styled Sawadee Greens served with the freshest of ingredients that awakens our taste buds. When I said ‘fresh’, I was drawing particular attention to the Seafood eg prawns lying atop the Salad & its crunchy texture already proven so!
In order of food served, the 1933 Power Carrot was served next! In spite of its normal-looking exterior, this Vitamin-packed velvety soup with a dash of carrot was very palatable! The soup wasn’t the only highlight for this dish, the bread also shared the limelight with its extremely crispsy texture!
Next came our Mains!
First up, the Hainanese Kampong Chicken Rice cooked at sub-boiling temperature and bathed in cold water to retain the flavor of the meat! Personally, what attracted me wasn’t so much of “Hainanese” word but more of the “Kampong”! These is especially so when most of the commercial chicken we eat nowadays are the rather unhealthy ones injected with hormones to make them grow at a faster rate, HERE the chicken are deviod of all these and further selected for its Extra tender and less oily meat! The rice had a nice “chicken-rice” fragrance pervading around it!
The 1933 Carrot Soup wasn’t the only ‘surprise-within-the-bun’ kinda dish that night! Another variation was this Nanyang Curry Chicken! Using the same kind of Kampong chicken mixed with other ingredients such as Potato chunks, carrots etc, these were bathed in an aromatic coconut-based curry! Personally, if I have to picked one between the two bread dishes, I would choose this one for its extremely flavourful spiciness!
Paving way for some western indulgence is this Grilled Pork Loin. By the time, this came, we were all almost full! Nonetheless, the aroma conveyed by the thyme, bay leaves, honey and brine continued to lured us on to continue. Sinking our teeth into this tender, juicy & well-done meat proved it to be well worth of the remaining space within our stomach!
All in all, I enjoyed the food tasting session at 1933 as they not only considered very carefully the freshness of the ingredients used but also ensure that patrons are given that 1930’s food tasting experience when you are dining there.
Looking for an air of classy nostalgia while dining, then look no further beyond 1933 as that is the GOLDEN year & also place where you should be at.
Thank you TIN, Gerald, and William!
