Surf & Turf = seafood and red meat matchmake in heaven.

Seafood lovers are in for a mouth-watering treat this September. Sky22 in Courtyard by Marriott Singapore Novena has recently launched the September Seafood Bonanza – a seafood themed buffet available every Friday to Sunday from 1 to 30 September. At a ridiculously affordable price from $48++ per adult (lunch) to $56++ per adult (dinner), you can sample a medley of your favorite fresh and cooked seafood without bursting your budget.

Located on the 22nd floor of the famed hotel, Sky22 gives quite a nice view of its surrounding precinct. Best to make reservations prior to coming here as the seats (100 guests’ seats in the restaurant, 12 guests in the private dining room) can be filled up quite quickly.

The buffet spread features appetizers such as Poached Salmon with Fennel and Zucchini, smoked tuna, smoked marlin, salads and assorted sushi. There is also a seafood-on-ice counter with fresh prawns, mussels and scallops. I know, there are some who would prefer cooked seafood. You can sip into piping hot bowls of Clam Chowder or Seafood Chowder. I tried the Seafood Chowder, it was just exquisitely delicious, savory enough to open your palate for the main feast.

One key highlight of the seafood buffet spread is the cook-to-order a la carte buffet spread with over 17 all-you-can-eat main courses and side fares. With favorites like Green Lip Mussels Pomodoro and Crab Quiche, the list is quite extensive so we’ve selected a few dishes to sample (even though the gluttony me wanted to had it all!). We got ourselves the Surf & Turf, which is my personal favorite. Each mouthful of the braised short ribs was rewarded with a quintessential doneness and flavor. The lobster meat was fresh and divine.

I had a fair share of the Oyster platter, which comprises of three different preparations (Rokefeller, Kilpatrick & Mornay). Of all I love the Mornay for its natural oyster sweetness and mellow topping.

Besides the Western seafood delights, other noteworthy local seafood dishes like the Singapore Chili Crab with Mantou Bun, Black Pepper Prawns, Nyonya Grilled Seabass and the picture above, the LaLa (White Clams) Bee Hoon. The aroma of this dish was strong and alluring, with an umami broth that I can’t help but keep sipping on it. What about the bee hoon? Simply awesomely slurp-able.

If you are looking for a place for a romantic date or to hangout with your friends, Sky22 is definitely your choice. For me, I would bring a friend or two to enjoy the good affordable seafood with a view that more than pays the price.

Embark On a Gastronomical Journey with NAMI Omakase Dinner!

Author: Sandra Koh

After months of rigorous renovation, Shangri-La Hotel’s iconic Tower Wing now features a brand new lobby, lounge and suites, along with various interesting flavours that satisfy even the most pernickety eater. The NAMI Restaurant and Bar situated at Level 24 is certainly one such place.

Helming the restaurant is Head Chef Akiba Shigeo, who culinary experiences include managing restaurants owned by Iron Chef Koumei Nakamura, along with preparing the wedding banquet the wedding banquet of Japan’s Prince Akishinomiya and Princess Kiko.

We were presented with the Kitano Daichi Omakase- a 7 course meal dinner on our night of visit. First on the omakase set was the dual appetisers-Hairy Crab with Tosa Vinegar, and Yuba Tofu & Sea Urchin. We really enjoyed the latter, for its half-chewy texture and fragrant soy flavour. We could literally felt the layers slowly opening up and faint soy flavour spreading through our mouths with each bite (it’s really therapeutic). The addition of the creamy uni added a hint of sweetness to the otherwise bland tofu.

Appetisers

Next on the table was the Dashi, a traditional dobin-mushi with Matsutake mushroom, along with pike conger, ginko, homewort and sudachi. Don’t you agree that the presentation is too adorable? We were told to first squeeze the lime in the soup, then drink the soup, and eat the ingredients last. Thankfully, the mushroom flavour was not overwhelming, rather it provided a refreshing aftertaste (thanks to the lime). The soup was really easy on the throat, and comforting to drink.

The third course is probably every Singaporean’s favourite- a Sashimi platter which included 5 curated selection of premium sashimi (tuna, amberjack, scallop, botan ebi and flounder) that is air flown into Singapore 4 times a week from Tokyo. Be surprised to find wasabi leaf as one of the accompanying condiment! We tasted the sashimi without any condiments, and were amazed by its freshness. They were unexpectedly crunchy, and exploded in our mouths with natural sweetness. We learnt from the chef that the white meat sashimi are best paired with Himalayan salt to bring out the natural flavours.

Sashimi

Fourth on the set was Tempura consisting of capelin fish, pumpkin, kidney beans and lotus root. I was utterly glad that the dish did not carry any rancid smell or cloying oily. Unlike the usual tempura, NAMI’s rendition provided a much lighter and fluffier batter, which was really crispy to bite on.

Tempura

The main dish was none other than the Saga Beef Sirloin Steak with Seasoned Grilled Oita Shiitake. The steak was really tender, and literally melted in our mouths. Each mouthful was accompanied by wonderful waves of sweet and buttery flavour that sent a small but puddle of pleasure through our spines. We felt that the sweet-savoury sauce did a great job in balancing out the fatty flavour of the dish.

Saga Beef

Next, Matsutake Mushroom Rice along with miso soup and pickles were served. The pairing of the steamed rice and mushroom was indeed brilliant, for the latter imparted its sweet nutty notes and transformed the rice into a delicately flavoursome dish. Instead of the usual beige coloured miso soup, NAMI’s version skewed towards the brownish side. We particularly love the soup for its rich toasty malt and caramel flavours, in fact it reminded us of the Misokatsu from Yabaton at Nagoya Station. The Chinese yam might look harmless, yet it’s really spicy, so do take small bites!

Our dinner was completed with a plate of seasonal fruits made up of melon, crystal pear and grapes. All we could say is, till now we’re still reminiscing the sweet taste of the melon.

Crazier about Crabs @ Brizo

Sponsored

Last year, I went crazy at Brizo because it was a party with the crabs!! We were not even together back then. This year, we are back at Brizo as a couple. Time flies. A bit more and we are at our first anniversary!

My entire family loves crab. My mom loves Chilli crabs, while my dad loves Butter crabs. Me? I prefer to have it with Salted Egg.

So what is the best place to have all 3 without burning a hole in the pocket? Buffet.

But where can you find Crab Buffet?

Right here in Park Hotel! The Crazier about Crabs buffet is finally back with a friendly pricing.

Wednesday to Thursday: Adult $68++, Child $34++

Friday to Sunday: Adult $80++, Child $40++

This buffet will be available from 1 April to 28 June 2015, from 6.30pm to 10.30pm.

Do you know why we were so fascinated about this pan here? It was because we were trying to win a staycation for ourselves! As for you, head over to our Instagram (@maybelinesim or @james_awyong) to look for this pan, guess the weight and win yourself some dining vouchers for 2 for the crab buffet 🙂

*Update: Contest closed

This pan is a brand new STAR dish – Crab in a Pan. Each pan contains a whole crab, prawns, clams, black mussels, potatoes, corn and sausages and you can choose a choice between Mariniere, Bouillabaisse and Cioppino.

Below is a picture showing a pan that serves 4.

By the way…. do you know that they have 26 kinds of seafood and 22 types of crab dishes?!?!

I thought I would love the salted egg crab the most but I love how the black pepper crabs were cooked that night!! It was so yummy!! James was also filling his stomach with crabs and I was secretly smiling inside because he look like a greedy boy when he was handling the crabs. All 10 of his fingers were dirty. So cute! Haha. It was partly because he was enjoying himself thoroughly throughout. The food was good and so was the ambience as we were seated with a table of friendly people and our good friend, William.

Brizo’s array of all-time favourite crab dishes sare the sweet-piquant Brizo Signature Chilli Crab, the aromatic Heavenly Fragrance Crab and the dim sum styled X.O. Steamed Crab in Egg White.

If you are a cargo lover, they have Premium Crabmeat Fried Rice with XO Sauce and Laksa too! I was too busy with the crabs that I forgot to take a picture of my laksa. It was a DIY station so you can cook the laksa yourself. I prefer it that way because I can skip the bean sprouts and add more eggs! Hehe. The broth of the laksa was quite good too! It was flavorful enough to want a second serving.

Crabmeat Kueh Pie Tee sounds cute too!

Of course, if you prefer to have some fried snacks, they have crispy soft shell crab and baked crab in shell as well.

And for the cold dishes, be sure to expect cold and fresh sashimi. salad, Alaskan Crab Claw, Australian Spanner Crab and Chilled Flower Crab!

Not forgetting sushi too!

The range of dessert they have is 5x of what you see here. From Conetto’s mini cone, to mini Magnum to durian mousse to kuehs to macaroons to many many many more!

Yup, with such a HUGE range of variety, the prices of the buffet still remains pocket friendly. It is always good to pamper yourself to such good food once in a while!

During this period from 1 April to 28 June 2015, diners can also stand a chance to win a weekend staycation at Park Hotel Clarke Quay by sharing the most delicious-looking plates! Do remember to #crabbuffetatpark so that they can see your entries!

Psst psst readers!! From 1st April to 12th April, quote “My Fat Pocket_earlybird20%off” to enjoy 20% off the buffet prices! Isn’t it super super pocket friendly already?!?!

Discount at Mellben!

One of my top seafood places in Singapore is none other than Mellben Seafood. I am saying this not because I am a good friend/sister of the boss’s son but because of their delectable Butter Crabs and Claypot Beehoon!!

Friends on my facebook would know that I often check into Mellben Signature (which is also another branch from Ang Mo Kio’s Mellben Seafood). I like to bring my parents and friends there for birthdays and gatherings. This is an alternative to the outlet in AMK because they accept reservations and you can save the time on queuing. The dishes and prices are exactly the same.

Now, you can quote “MAYBELINE” for 15% discount for bills $150 and above!! This is valid till the end of Aug 2014!!

I love how their HUGGGGEEEE crabs were displayed! You know, we were only there for 2 hours but they were already gone from the tank with 1.5hour. They had to refill their crabs from again and again!!

I had never like yam but I went ahead to eat this Deep Fried Yam Scallops because it was fried to golden brown perfection. Soft on the inside but crispy on the outside. This dish is also served along with sweet sauce.

Singaporeans like food served or fried with garlic, so this Garlic Steamed Bamboo Clam might be of interest to you. All the seafood were served fresh and in generous portion, needless to say, the same for the calm – juicy and fresh. Although you can see a whole lot of garlic but it does not overpower the taste and chewiness of the clam.

Mango and prawns are my top two favorites. And a fusion of these two can lead to a whole new level of awesomeness!

During the first round of food tasting, the bloggers actually ordered a double/triple portion of this Salted Egg Pork Ribs!! Hence, I would definitely label this as a Blogger’s Recommendation dish!! Anything with salted egg is nice!!

Golden brown Signature Seafood Beancurd is golden. This is damn good. Eat it while it’s hot!!

XO Sauce Asparagus with Shimeiji Mushroom.

We tried Chilli crabs served with buns, Butter crabs and Claypot Beehoon. I have to hide all the other pictures of the crabs to show you how FUCKING AWESOME THIS IS. I had a triple share of the beehoon soup.

All the claws were so huge that they were bigger than my palms (or about the size of my palm). If you can’t get enough of the beehoon and broth, you can always order another portion (which I always do). You can literally taste the sweetness of the crab by drinking the broth. I would skip the crab just for the beehoon and broth!!

Desserts like Hasma and etc are also available at Mellben. Exactly what was needed to end a meal.

Mellben Signature is located at Bestway Building, 12 Prince Edward Road.

Nearest MRT Station: Tanjong Pagar MRT Station (walkable distance).

If you’re driving, it is charged at per entry. WOOOHAAAAA. See you guys there!! Please call them to make your reservations at 6220 5512 to award disappointment!

Momiji Japanese Buffet – GOOD!

I have long heard of Momiji Japanese Buffet but have never been there personally because I like to stick to my usual buffet place, which, surprisingly, also belongs to the same group of company as Momiji!

Being a vivid fan of japanese food, I wouldn’t allow myself to miss out on food tasting like this. The restaurant I went to is located at 55 Newton Road, Revenue House.

A King Crab feast was also taking place during the visit. The feast was supposed to end some time later but due to overwhelming response, the crabs are running out fast!! So while stock lasts! The king crab feast is available with a promotion price of $37.80+++ for an adult. I was expecting the price to go over $50 but no. It is this affordable!!

Although it is called the King Crab Feast, you can also find yourself indulging in the freshest sashimi, wagyu beef, kurobuta, shabu shabu, Teppanyaki and seaaafooooooodddddd.

While indulging in the food, you can also enjoy free flow of Sapporo beer….. yes, this is also included in the buffet…. Free flow of beer… Mmmm… How do they even make profit?!

If you want cooked food, you can always go for other options. They have a variety of premium items. You can have fresh, to grill, to steam and so much more!!

No japanese buffet is japanese if they don’t serve chawanmushi.

Guilty but not sorry, I had 4 cups of chawanmushi that evening.

Some local delights can also be found in the buffet. This suits my family so much. My mom and brother prefers local delights while my dad and me prefers Japanese food. What a good place for a family buffet dinner. And the entire meal for the table would only cost us less than $200!

Char siew.

Deep fried tofu.

Scallops.

Mouth watering teppanyaki.

For dessert wise, you can to choose from a huge variety as well!! There is free flow of Haagen-Dazes ice cream, cakes, moji, chocolates, cream puffs and fruits!

They are all of better quality – expensive ice creams, thick creamy chocolates, sweet fruits and chilled cakes!

Visit their Facebook for more information on the buffets available! – https://www.facebook.com/Momiji.JapaneseBuffet

Boxing Crab Sentosa

Do you remember Boxing Crab Sentosa? Recap here: http://maybelinesim.sg/2012/12/08/boxing-crab-sentosa/

A must-try is the Braised Claypot Crab with Superior Broth and Pumpkin!!!

This is my third time there (I went back with my family for the pumpkin crab as well).

They came up with a Menu for Mothers’ Day Special!

Treat your mother to the best crab secret in Sentosa, a nice gem that overlooks the seafront and as such the scenery is splendid.

The Mother’s Day Set Menu for 4 pax is at $328++ and only valid from 1 to 12 May.

And the dishes includes:

Deep Fried Spiny Lobster Salad
I like the chewy feel of this dish and it taste as if it was soaked in salted egg yolk! Yums!!

Braised Treasure Chicken in Lotus Leaf

Most mom loves herbal stuffs. This taste a little like herbal chicken but different.
Look at the pictures below and you can see how filled it is with all the different ingredients!

Homemade Water Chestnut Bean Curd with Spices Meat

Inside the tender beancurd is some crispy water chestnut. The meat used is chicken, not pork.

Boxing Crab do not serve Pork or Lard.

Stir Fried Sea Scallop and Prawn with Asparagus

Big scallops and juicy prawns.

Braised Chili Crab wrapped in Lotus Leaf Deep Fried Bun

And now, the highlight, the Chili Crab which most Singaporeans loveeeeee!

As much as I love their Pumpkin crab, I love their Chili crab too. Most of the bloggers that night prefer chili to pumpkin and I had a hard time deciding which is nicer because both were equally awesome.

But I guess my ultimate choice is still the pumpkin crab!!!

What’s Chili Crab with Man Tou right????

Alright, we are ready to attack them now!!!

Stir Fried Vermicelli with Seafood

Another dish with juicy prawns and scallop.

Red Bean Soup with Coconut and Lotus Seed

There is always room for dessert no matter how full one is.

Pamper your mom with the Red Bean Soup after a satisfying meal.

Happy Seafood Lovers!!
